Type Locality and Naming

Along the Kokcha River, southwestern end of the South Nuratau Range. M.N. Solovieva, V.D. Chekhovich, 1954 (425, p. 549). Stratotype on the Kokcha River. KOKCHIN HORIZON -Based on the Kokchin suite. V.A. Arapov, Z.S. Rumyantseva, 1972 (166, p. 267). Stratotype - the eponymous suite, Kokcha River, lectostratotype in the area of the Belkuduk mine, Muruntau Mountains, Central Kyzylkum (386).

Synonym: Kokchin Suite, Кокчинская св., Kokchin Horizon


Lithology and Thickness

Dark thin-bedded biomorphic and detrital algal-foraminiferal limestones, with bauxites and bauxitic rocks at the base. Thickness 200-250m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the limestones of the Zafarabad Fm. Kokchin Horizon - Lies at the base of the Moscovian stage

Upper contact

Overlying deposits are not established. (165; 439; 460). Kokchin Horizon - overlain by the Kelvasai Horizon.

Regional extent

Southwestern end of the South Nuratau Range, Kokcha River. The complex of horizons is present in the Kokchin suite (Kokcha River), the lower part of the North Muruntau Fm (Aktau, Muruntau Mountains), the middle part of the Kal'makbulak Fm (Karachatyryr Mountain), the middle part of the Sagdor Fm (southern slope of the Gissar Range).
